having gotten rid of the status display. Is there a way for me to "get at" this area of the main screen to, e.g., post links, do a bit of self-advertising like giving a list of links to workshops our organization offers, etc.?

I see this is an add-on for XF but it doesn't list version 1.5, which is what we're on, so I don't know if I can use it.

Yes you can use it, 70% of XF users use it on their Forum
