XF 2.2 Conditional Statement Syntax

Can someone help me with the syntax for Conditional Statements?

I'm trying to return a value based on a custom field - so if the custom field is "Male" i only want to show an "M"?

I think i have the IF part correct but cannot find the right Syntax for the value to be returned?
