We just converted our site from another software to XF2.1 and while we're loving everything so far, I cannot figure out why nobody can upload images. I have been through the usergroup and node permissions, I have made sure that the attachment file size limit is sufficiently high, and yet nobody can upload images. I am not sure what the problem is and need help.

I went thru something very similar. I had clicked YES to Upload attachments to posts in my user group permissions, searching for more answers, I was told to contact my webhost company and explain them this setback, so I did. I submitted a ticket and took them less than 10 minutes to figure it out and fixed it for me. I was told the issue was caused by ModSecurity rules triggered.
Now members can upload images when replying and also upload to XFMG
