can styles/addons be updated directly via source instead of reimporting via admin UI?

it seems that the only way to update a style (and addon as well?) is to re-upload the .xml file via the admin UI. can it be done simply by updating the files on the server? we are integrating xenforo into our application stack which already has automated deployment mechanisms, but requires that the process be headless.

is there a command line tool which can be run on the server after the source files are updated which will act as a "reimport" without needing manual human interaction? the goal here is to have our source repository serve as the master copy of our styles/addons instead of the live database of templates, etc.
