XF 2.1 Can I get an "unread balloon" in submenus?

I have created a shortcut menu for some users with shortcuts to the most used nodes.
We used a similar menu in xf1.5 and there we had counters in the menu, showing number of unread threads in that node with {xen:helper counter, 23}

I have tried to find something similar for 2.1, but I have so far drawn a blank...

As far as I know it'd require an add-on.
