XF 2.2 Can conversations be monitored or read by Mods?

Is there a setting to allow/disallow certain user groups to monitor or read private conversation between other users? Or are all conversations always private in between the users?

Nope. Even if a specific conversation message has been reported, staff can't access the originating conversation (if they don't participate in that), though they (obviously) can view the reported conversation message within the report.

There are various addons that solve that. There's one that will monitor conversations for keywords and report based on that. There are others that will just give Staff ability to read other conversations directly.

Probably be simplest to just use an addon like this, if you have a specific suspect in mind:

Login as User (LAU2)

Administrators can log in as User X with this add-on. Login via the admin bar or via the member profile. Of course, this is only possible with the correct permission. This helps e.g. to better understand problems a user has in order to be able...

Don't know of any that give an actual notification, but Oz has a mod that gives you a way of checking whether a post has been read:
