It's funny it used to be like 75 characters now they are saying use 250 to 270

I added 270 still that SEO test site says add more... Mind you the spaces mean nothing it's the actual words that really count

Meta descriptions should be 155 characters, plus or minus.

The forum description that you add in the node description field (when you create or edit the forum in the ACP > Nodes list.

This shows both on the actual front end forum and the meta description.

Note that whatever you put here is not going to affect SEO in regard to being indexed or how much weight Google gives your page for the search position.

But if you are lucky enough to have Google show a forum page in the search results list, the description that shows there may be useful to entice someone to click on your site rather than someone else's.

But, you cannot control whether Google actually displays the meta description as opposed to some other piece of text on the page. Often it will, but sadly not always.

I understand that the forum description is the meta description. The issue is that best practice for a meta description is ~155 characters including spaces and that is too long to display on page underneath the forum title. I'd like my description that displays to be maybe 30-40 characters, and my meta descriptions to be 155 characters.

A description of what your forum is about. So anyone finding it in search results will be enticed to visit it.
