Andrej is correct. It's not a bug, but it is a problem that many people are facing. There has been a surge in spam experienced by many forum admins in the last 24 hours.

In short, XF provides many tools to help block spammers and to deal with them once they have spammed you. If spammers are getting through then you can moderate new accounts, setup Q&A verification, use addons to block IPs and countries, etc. All of this is discussed in that thread.
