Does using an external service like ManDrill reduce the load on the server? I ask because I need to send fairly regular newsletters to our membership (it's a private forum with a very specific userbase).

The simple answer is if you are using a service/server other than your own to send a newsletter then yes, it will reduce the load on your server.

We use Mandrill and highly recommend it. We built our own add-on to handle Mandrill bounces, spam reports etc but I believe xfrocks has a similar add-on available.
