Been away for a few years

Are you actually just trolling? That's what it seems like. That was a rhetorical question, by the way. No answer is necessary, mostly because, even if you are trolling, you'd still suggest otherwise. Anyways, in case not, I've got a few quick thoughts after skimming through this thread very quickly...

id say go look at vb6

Does vB not run vB6 on their own forums? If they do, and that's what you're saying looks "new and fresh" then I don't think you've really been around long. What part of their forums looks any different than what we've seen for years?

I'm not disagreeing that forums, including XF, still look largely the same as they have for years but vB definitely hasn't changed that at all. I'd argue that their forums look more 1990 than any of the others outside maybe phpBB.

I am failing to see any reason to start a community in 2024 on any topic other than a topic not allowed on facebook.

Then don't...why would you even consider doing something when you don't see a reason to do it?

So i only know if i start anew …

1. it will not be cloud hosted as i want control
2. the site would need to function “mobile first” in browser without an app
3. Push notifications without 3rd party addon/subscription service
4. No App… TAPATALK or anything similar
5. Google must love the code and prioritize search results

So you come on here to complain about how XF looks but when you list five things you'd want from a forum you never mentioned it. In fact, you pretty much just described XF.

not a dig at all but xenforo looks the same as it did on launch. is it still being developed?

just visited vb6 forum and was impressed visually and functionally but seems everyone hates anything vb4 and above and most people hate everything vb3 and above

still cant see how a forum survives in 2024 with facebook most all our potential members are in facebook groups
Welcome back. It has been a while. Life treating you well?

I challenge anyone to send these 2 links to a family or friend and ask them which looks better or which is newer
A lot of us are too close to the trees to see the forest.
just different brands and colors of lipstick on the same animal.
they look very similar to me.
that is why themes are available.
the first link does have more that a lot of people ask for than xenforo.
but that is one of the problems people complain about from reading.
but i do agree some seem to be blind to faults in xenforo.

And why would i take years away then just come back to try to make you guys mad at me lol lighten up friend.

I think its the simple colors and fonts that make vb6 look clean, inviting and professional. xenforo just looks cheap, cartoonish and uninviting. I’m allowed to have my opinion even if it’s different from yours. I have nothing to gain. in fact if xf has the best framework and i decide to make a go i will buy another license heck i may already have one or two expired ones i cant remember. and try to skin it to look like vb6. i am undecided.

Its nice to know xf meets my requirements, i also do not want to start a new site on old version of software i can just wait for 3.0 in that case

I'm definitely not mad. I couldn't care less whether, or not, you like XF. I have no skin in the game. I was just trying to get clarification on how you thought vB6 was any better. It looks a lot like every other forum I've ever seen to me.

Again, I never said you were wrong. I was just wondering what you were seeing that I wasn't. You said in your first post that you were "impressed visually and functionally". I don't see anything that I'd say was impressive so I was wondering what it was that impressed you. I'm not saying vB6 looks bad. Again, I just don't see how it's much different than most other forums out there, visually. I haven't used it in years so I have no idea how it is functionally.

You need to articulate what it is you are expecting in future releases instead of just saying "make it better/different".
Here you go:
5. Google must love the code and prioritize search results
I know this may still be considered vague, but its a key to success. It would be nice to get a very well thought out design that outperforms all the competition when it comes to Google ranking:
  1. Make it lightning fast
  2. Take structured data implementation to the fullest.
  3. Rethink internal linking and page setup for optimal page rank juice.

  • I hope it also addresses various old suggestions that can only be implemented with a new style.
  • And finally bring on the drag & drop page builder!

I'll go back under my rock now and keep dreaming my pipe dreams. :D

- would be nice to reply to a reply directly without adding to the entire thread

- infinite scrolling should be standard, no body wants to toggle pages anymore, as a matter of fact the page should infinite scroll to the next thread if at the end of the thread

I would stop using XF if that was ever implemented.
You shouldn't stand in the way of progress.

Why isn't there a xf 3.0 wishlist forum?

Is it because as customers we are to sit in silence and cross our fingers?

A lot of us have ideas about what we want, that is a free think tank for xenforo.

Passion is contagious… Where is it?

This is all possible with Xenforo 🫡

5. Google must love the code and prioritize search results
You should check with Google on how to prioritize search results (and then share with the rest of us!)

If your biggest issue with Xenforo is the default theme, then you'll be fine. There are plenty of options of themes and vibrant Marketplace.

Congrats on the success of your forums, always great to see thriving communities!
