I just tried it myself and I don't get this message. Are you using the latest version of Xenforo v2.0.7 ?

I figured there is no reason to make multiple lists when we can just make everyone's life easy by contributing to just one master list.

How would one update this list without gaining duplicate entries?

Because there are simply more and more such services.
I don't keep an active eye on whether there are updates from spam lists but update them from time to time and then such jumps are nothing unusual.
