XF 2.2 Avatars don't need to be cropped, yet they are, why is this?

How the gif avatar I uploaded looks when I click on edit:
20210516_135631.webp

How it looks everywhere else:
20210516_135817.webp

Not sure if you notice, but in the second image it's cropped, whereas in the first, somehow it resized itself to fit the entire thing.

So my question is, why can't I keep it the way it is in the first picture? If this happened, doesn't that mean there's a way to upload avatars without cropping them?

We store an uncropped version for editing purposes and with larger portrait or landscape images you can use the original uncropped version in that overlay to select the crop position.

We crop avatars to square because that’s how they’re displayed for a uniform look. By default we style the square into a circle.

Any avatar that isn’t square will be cropped. There’s no way to stop that.

If you're able to store an uncropped version, then that means it can be implemented, otherwise it wouldn't be stored in the first place.
