When upgrading XenForo or an Add-on (either official or 3rd party) there might be outdated templates that need to be merged.

While it is possible to semi-automatically merge those templates by accessing ACP home, following the outdated templates warning, clicking on Automatically merge and confirming this action by clicking Merge this is pretty time consuming when multiple installations are affected.

It would therefore be nice if it was possible to do do this fully automatically (either via an option, a config.php setting or a commad line switch), this would significantly simplify rollouts.

Those templates which it is possible to automatically combine XenForo and so updates. For the rest, it makes no sense, if it can’t reduce, it means strong differences and it is necessary to reduce it yourself, since it is not known what can get out. It will do more harm than good. The current system is working properly and correctly.

When upgrading XenForo via CLI and there are outdated templates the following message does get displayed:
Note: outdated templates have been detected. This is normal after upgrading. This can be resolved by visiting the outdated templates section of the control panel. Incorporating template changes is important to ensure new features work properly and bug fixes take effect.

As stated above, doing this does offer an option to automatically merge templates (if possible), but triggering this does require manual action after an upgrade has been performed.

My suggestion is to optionally make this fully automatic.
