XF 2.2 Automated Unsubscribe

I'm trying to make sense of this automated unsubscribe, so that I can hopefully get it to actually work for us. I have the unsubscribe email setup, but I rarely check it because there is never anything in it. Recently, we started sending out some emails from the forum "Email Users" and I started seeing a few emails accumulate in this inbox. I didn't think much about it until I noticed duplicates after sending out a few emails over a few weeks time. I decided to check the user, and none of their preferences were changed.

However, I tested the {unsub} link in the email we sent out on one of my forum accounts. The link is not automated. It opens up a page on the forum with the option to:

• Unsubscribe from the AV NIRVANA mailing list
• Stop all emails from AV NIRVANA

I checked my unsubscribe inbox, and there is no email from me.

So what are users seeing to trigger this email to the unsubscribe email address?
Why wouldn't it be unsubscribing them automatically?

We just updated our forum to 2.3.5, and automated unsubscribe is not working. It wasn't working prior to the upgrade either. Thought maybe the upgrade would fix it.

I created a Gmail account and added a new user. Sent an email to the user and in Gmail clicked the one-click unsubscribe button.

The unsubscribe cron job ran, and I checked the user account. Nothing for email preferences has changed... still subscribed.
