Anyone had success with shoutbox/chatroom type add-ons?

My new forum is doing great but we're definitely finding our identity and one of the bigger complaints is users that are starting threads like "The steak I had for lunch was undercooked." As a new moderator, you hate to delete threads and say no, only this content can be posted here (especially when some have donated money) but I understand the users who think those threads are dumb. So, I thought the shoutbox/chatroom type deal could allow some users to get the trivial posts out of their system.

Shoutbox/chat room add-ons don't seem very common and the support for them seems to be lacking a bit.

Anyone have any thoughts on using them and/or run into the issue I describe?

Sort of I used for a while and I was more or less happy with it, but it took a decent amount of server resources (e.g. non-negligible processor load) and I eventually dropped it for Discord because it was either make an official Discord or someone would make an unofficial one...but the issue was that most casual talk went there, making the forums way less active.

Yeah I'd thought about the activity leech. My forum base is on the older side so don't think anyone will think to start using discord luckily.

Don't you have an off topic forum?

Typically those forums are for threads of that nature - just take a look at the one here.

The members who don't want to participate in a specific thread don't have to.

Why do those threads annoy them?
They can just ignore them.
