I finally narrowed down my search and decided on a blog and a domain. Now, I just need to learn how to use Wordpress. Any suggestions, tips, tricks, things I should do, etc? Also, I could use recs for theme and add-ons if anyone has them. Thanks.

Hmmm. I was under the impression that most themes allow a fair bit of customization. Is that not the case?
Some themes don't allow you to change the layout without touching the code.

Because of a parent child theme system and complicated user controls. The user interface is so bad I had to hire someone to help me setup my last theme with them. I have seen others have similar issues.
Well crap. Guess that's out for me then.

Nono...what he means is that some skins have these "child" themes, and plugins that you install for it (most child skins have them pre-installed, too) you are vulernable to hacks than those skins that work on it's own and you install the plugins yourself.
If you installed the skin yourself, and installed the plugins yourself, then you know that theme/plugin is reputable. As you know, you always install the most reputable (trusty) themes/plugins. The same is true with xenForo or any other "packaged in a box" software solutions.
I'm looking for a good theme.
I am checking out Genesis theme framework.
Any other suggestions ?

Genesis framework is good but I prefer a minimalist theme for example executive theme by angel Ortega http://demo.esthemes.com/ . It´s one of the best designers at Latam. Genesis framework uses many plugins and I prefer less plugins , I use only:

Pagenavi
Sitemap xml
Quick cache
