External issue 'Any' is not deselected when you choose a specific forum or prefix in thread batch update (iOS)

When you are doing a batch update threads, the normal behaviour on desktop is that Any is chosen by default, but as soon as you choose specific forum or prefix, then (as you would expect) any becomes no longer chosen for the update. This makes sense because you wouldn't want any as well as a specific forum or prefix.

But on iOS (iPhone) the any stays selected along with the individual forums or prefixes.

Automated triage: Browser issue

Thank you for reporting this issue. These lists are the browser's own multi-select controls, and we don't run any script on them. On desktop, a plain click replaces the current selection, which is why Any is deselected there. Safari on iOS shows these lists as a checklist where each tap toggles an option, so Any stays selected until you untick it yourself.

This is an automated assessment. A member of staff may review and update it.

As this happens with all ios browsers, rather than being dismissed as a browser issue, it seems like the implementation ought to be addressed somehow.

Either by:
  • An explanation it doesn’t work as expected on mobiles
  • Making the any tab disabled by default (maybe just on mobiles)
I understand if it was just one (non/compliant) browser.

Just out of interest I tried with Firefox on Android (my usual) and got the same result. When I tapped the "Prefix" list, a pop-up with checkboxes opened and I had to manually uncheck Any. So it's not just iOS devices. I think the first option, a warning that it may not work as expected on mobile, would be the way to go. However, that's out of the realm of bug reports and into suggestions, IMHO.

(That said, Batch Update Threads is a function I would not necessarily be comfortable using on a phone anyhow. I tend to stick to desktop for admin work. Too much risk of my fat fingers hitting the wrong thing at the wrong time. ;))

I had to do it a lot after an import from another forum, and all gad to be Donne while travelling so I had no alternative but the phone. Whether it is technically a bug is I think moot, it’s something that isn’t working the way anybody would expect and could potentially cause irreversible issues.
