XF 2.1 Any advice on tools/methods of backing up your XF forum (forum itself and database separately)?

Right now I'm taking a digitalocean droplet snapshot 5 or 6 times a day, it stores an instance of the whole site as it is, and if I want to restore it it will restore the entire site.

But I feel like there's a better way to do this, unless I'm making changes to the forum itself, I don't really need to be storing it just the new threads that are created/new users etc

Also I'd like to automatically be able to store the database at intervals throughout the day, I think. To be honest I'm not 100% sure what the best way of going about this is - if anyone has advice on the right way I should implement this I would be very grateful, thanks

Have a look at percona xtrabackup.
Than let a cron job do the work.
