Seems one of the most important features that my Phpbb had but my new VB5 does not is "unread threads" how can one easily see that they have not already read?

Are you referring to forum_view?
There is also an option posted in the resource manager where you can add indicators http://xenforo.com/community/resources/add-indicator-after-node-title.1704/
The screenshot is displaying them on the main index but you can also have them displaying in forum_view if the bold font isn't enough. Plus you have a blue icon indicator showing on unread threads in forum_view
