XF 2.2 ALT+ codes: some work some dont

I'm playing at different ways of getting ā, ē, ī, ō, ū, Ā, Ē, Ī, Ō and Ū into my editor.
One solution is ALT+ so for instance ALT + entering 1 on my keypad gives me ☺
ALT+0196 displays Ä
ALT +0230 gives æ

So why don't these codes work?

Is there a way I can add them as BBCode using either ALT codes or special characters or something or even replacements for À or À
If I paste M&#257ori sometimes it works as Māori and sometimes not, same if I type it.
