AI Music Creation - Incredible!

Many moons ago I played in a rock band and I wrote a song called Lady Beware. At nearly 72 years old I haven't a hope in hells chance of playing again, however, thanks to some amazing AI software I'm able to create music again. I rewrote my original song, giving it brand new lyrics. Although AI does all the heavy lifting it's still under human direction. I have to define the instruments, the arrangement and the beat, so I was bowled over by the result. Some may call it cheating, and it probably is, lol. But it's given me the chance to be creative again. I've done quite a few songs, some old and some new over a whole range of styles. So here's my rendition of one my old songs. See what you make of it.

Over 50 years ago I was smitten by this amazing young girl. We fell in love (well I was only 20 lol) and I was stricken by her beautiful brown eyes and how I just melted into them. I wrote a poem about them, but she never got to see it - things happen and at that young age it's easy to drift apart. I forgot all about it until I started digging through old lyrics I had written when I was in the band. I thought it would be nice to turn it into a song. My musical heart is in rock music, but I like lots of other styles too and this wasn't meant to be a rock song. So, after a bit of thinking I had a lightbulb moment and said 'reggae' and you know, it works - well it does for me. See what you think, it's not very long.

Honestly, the only difference I see between a big hit and this song is that the big hit is on mainstream channels and this one is here.
Congratulations!

Thank you for your kind words - I am hoping to get these songs onto a YT channel, but I'm just happy to be creating again.

Okay, that first one is actually a pretty nice late 70s-early 80s rock sound. I think this is fine for AI since you're the artist in the end. It's the AI-generated slop that Spotify and others are starting to let into the wild that irks me as a music fan.

YouTube, Spotify, Fill in the Blank, are already chock full of millions of AI songs / bands / artists.
AI is an absolute waste of time - and art it creates is a waste of time. If I could, I'd flip a switch and never see/hear/watch any of it.

I personally could not have any less interest in AI art. Period. Nothing personal, but I have no interest in anybody's +1 into the already millions of AI songs uploaded.

There are literally fully AI bands / songs that have made it onto top lists. Leave me out of it. Leave me out of all of it.

I get that, if people are pouring out crap because they are just fiddling and let AI take the lead. But I have literally done 100's of takes fine tuning each song, burning credits. I won't put anything out unless I am 99% happy with it (100% doesn't exist as that is perfection). At 72 years old I am able to be creative again and without AI that just wouldn't happen. It's a tool, nothing more, it's the creative elements that make a difference, looking at the production values and writing all the lyrics; many times lyrics need rewriting if the phrasing or number of syllables don't work; so there's a fair bit of thinking to be done. I did a lot of research when I found that these programs existed to make sure I got the most adaptive.
I'd love to be able to change the lyrics to popular songs.

The software has copyright detection built in so it would blow you out. I can't even reference artists, if I want a particular style, let's say I want a song to have the ZZ Top sound I can't say give it a ZZ Top sound - it's just kicks it out, so I have to think what elements that kind of sound would incorporate. AI is good at giving you what you want, but it needs proper direction otherwise you end up with sloppy pap.

I have no time for ai in the context of art.

People will say it is the future, and probably it is. Kids growing up now wont even know what’s involved in learning to be a musician or any kind of artist and just get ai to churn out its regurgitated ****. It will be more about creating a prompt than learning an art and creating something via your own artistic talent.

Much of it is copyright theft but it gets away with it by stealing little bits from multiple sources. But then a big chunk of the general public couldn’t care less about copyright theft.

I may be biased of course having been a professional musician and composer all my life. Now just another sad old git ranting about ai slop. :)

Really! Did you even bother to read my explanations about composition, lyric writing - AI is a tool, it's like having a room full of session musicians. You can ask them to play a tune, and they could probably ad-lib something, but they won't be able to play YOUR song without direction and the lyrics you write. AI is a tool. It reminds me of how people reacted to the model T-Ford when that arrived. I was a professional musician and played in a band for 15 years, I played bass, guitar and keyboards, but at 72 I can't even hold a guitar now and AI has allowed me to be creative again. OK some people are strictly biased when it comes to AI and that's their prerogative, and that's OK but don't trash someone's work because it doesn't fit your agenda.

It's more AI slop. It's ugly and it really does stink up the forum.
I don't care what your age is mate.
Just be smart when using AI and don't post it up as ai slop.

Perhaps some of these replies (mine included) are off-topic to your original post.

The problem is that every AI tool you're using exists and has capabilities strictly and solely because its stolen the talent, knowledge and resources of real artists. Period.

These AI tools you're using can only do what they do because actual creative people (like yourself) have created and published art. Real people. Now a few mega-corps come in a swallow all of it - with zero compensation or even credit - and digest it into these tools you are using.

Its just wrong. It feels wrong. And I simply do not enjoy consuming it. At all.

Yep. There are plenty of creative people losing their livelihoods almost overnight. Luckily I’m more or less retired but I’m hearing stuff on TV that I’ve done but regurgitated. Not enough to sue, sadly, but enough to know had I not retired it would have been curtains anyway working as a media composer.

Which in turn allows AI to replace the people it's been stealing from. I'm 67, I've spent the majority of my life working within the music industry as a songwriter and musician, studio engineer and producer. I own a small commercial recording studio and I was initially a cautious adopter of AI but more recently I've started to regard it as a cancer when it comes to the creative arts.

Yeh, I was the same. Thinking it was just another tool to use in music production. Like sampling (which was controversial when it was first introduced, and I’m sure had a detrimental effect on musician employment. But once it was there it allowed producers to do a lot more on a specific budget.

I’m sure ai has a place in a lot of production tools, but total replacement of a musician’s or a band's creative process is what turns me off.

Same with images and video. Great for editing and enhancement, but not for creating “art.” I just made a short movie, that I was very pleased with as it tested my FCP skills to the limit and took weeks of work, but then when someone said “amazing what ai can do these days” I was very p’d off.

I agree that AI is going to cost jobs, but there are less and less people turning to music. Whether that's a lack of interest or a genuine lack of talent remains to be discovered, but more and more young people, who are the future, have little interest in exploring anything outside of their bedrooms and moving away from their mobile screens. Of course talent still exists, but I don't see ANY young bands emerging in my area, where as one time, back when I was in a band, there were loads - zero now. Perhaps it's a sign of the times, perhaps the creatives are there but using AI instead of getting out there. Whatever, the use of AI is here to stay and anyone can be derisory about its use, but for me it's allowed me to explore music again. And I work really hard with it to fine tune and ring every little bit that I can from it. It's never going to be perfect, it may in time, but for now I am having fun exploring and creating and if that's not for you, then fine - everyone has a choice. My original post was to show what it can do when used properly and by someone who understands musical concepts. Writing is an art and music is an art and means to tell stories that have depth and meaning, or something that's just a bit of fun.

I don't care what anyone thinks about using AI to create music, call it slop if you want, but would you have said that if I hadn't mentioned what I created was done using AI? What if I had said 'this is my band'? I'll leave it there because I'm busy writing more songs and exploring genres I could never have imagined back in the day, and I'm having fun - something that has a tendency to disappear as you get older.

Young people are still motivated to learn to play instruments but financial constraints within the education system and the shift to digital media among other things makes it difficult for them to follow any meaningful path.

I'm a coordinator for a local 140 seat theatre and while we can attract major artists like Albert Lee, Andy Fairweather-Low and Judy Tzuke, I don't recall being able to book any up and coming new bands in the last couple of years. We tend to have to fill empty slots with tribute acts.

The reason that AI is so loathed within the music industry is that it's putting everyone out of a job not just musicians. Shops selling musical instruments are closing down, sound engineers are been replaced by plugins, illustrators are being impacted. My guitar tech who works with some of the biggest names in the industry is struggling. It's an endless list.

While I have no problem with people like yourself creating AI constructed music for their own enjoyment what it's doing to the music industry is criminal. And then there's Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) estimated to arrive within the next four years which should have the capability to learn to play any instrument instantaneously simply by scanning the internet for music theory, tab reading and audio recognition.
