XF 1.5 Adding Empty Spaces with Compact Nodes?

I'm reading this description of how the compact node system works, and I was wondering if is it possible to add empty spaces with compact nodes to preserve the overall symmetry instead of having each component dynamically change to fill in any blank spaces in the grid layout?

As an example (from the description page, not my site), could the 3rd item on this be the same length as the other 2, with empty space filling in the difference?
