XF 2.2 7 disputes from PayPal, same user signed up 7 times in 2 weeks!

Today I got 7 disputes from one user that has signup with the same user account for an account upgrade (same account upgrade) 7 times.

How is that possible?

Sorry, but shouldn't that be blogged somehow by the Xenforo system, it make no sense that someone signup 7 times in the same months for the same monthly membership.

How can I stop this from happen again, it is total amateur that this is possible at all.

This is a PayPal issue, I think, not a Xenforo issue. I've had this happen with other platforms. I think the solution is to keep a close eye on all user upgrade transactions for just this sort of thing. A lot of forum members are not very knowledgeable about tech issues like this.

Sorry, but that's a very wrong answer.

Xenforo should have a mechanism that make sure the same user account can't sign up for the same membership several times, means only one time.

If you say so...

I do get rather tired though of seeing people blame the software for every lapse in responsible forum management. And as I said, the issue affects other platforms as well, including vBulletin and WordPress.

He point is valid. There should be something that deals with such thing. At least a message appears telling those who signup multiple times that they already have.

if you say so, I won't tell what I'm tired of. Every time I post something you show up with something useless to solve the issue.

At least Xenforo put a IGNORE button in here.

Disputes are filed in paypal and its not something XF has control over.
This is the same for any vendor, anywhere.

I don't think xF allows a user to buy an upgrade twice, let alone 7 times.
If the upgrade has been cancelled then it can be repurchased.

If a problematic member is causing issues such as this then they should be dealt with the same way any other disruptive member should be - warnings, then bans.

I'm sorry, but I thought Xenforo was a professional company, are you serious, you want to answer like this?

From the answers here I can conclude that Xenforo don't want to take any responsibility and accept that this is an obvious problem that has to be solved some how. Nor are they interested in helping their customers to avoid such obvious problems in the future for account upgrades.

It's like to talk to a door I could get the same answers, I will get it customized but thought Xenforo was in a different league compared to their competitors, my fault.

XenForo has no way of preventing charge backs or anything else; that is entirely on Paypal.

You can use this add-on to prevent multiple account sign up: https://xenforo.com/community/resources/signup-abuse-detection-and-blocking.6812/

It does a very good job of preventing multiple accounts, and allows you to be a bit more proactive about account registrations.

As far as I know, no software has a built in multiple account detection feature as it is an ever-evolving fight against new ways to bypass it.

I do feel like a valid suggestion would be for any charge back users to go into some sort of approval queue or restrict them so they can't keep purchasing it until approved. Owners aren't always on to manage this aspect. Granted this happening over two weeks should have been caught ideally by the owner.

This won't prevent an initial charge back and it will not prevent multiple accounts attempts but it could stop basic scenarios like this one.

If the chargebacks cause fees which I believe they do in some scenarios, users could exploit this easily.

There is a workaround although it's not obvious.

Create an "upgrade" which can't be purchased and disables all other upgrades, and manually promote the member.

That prevents all other upgrades from being purchased while they are "promoted.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I just paid a developer to implement the below mentioned "protection method" which should have been standard in the forum script.

The most simple way to block this would be a basic cross check build in the core of Xenforo, don't allowing the same PayPal email to signup / pay multiple times for the same "upgrade" within X time.

So, match the PayPal email with the email address that the user signed up on the forum, if positive proceed if negative decline. I have seen many large eCommerce websites using this to avoid fraud.

It's not rocket science and should be standard.

User X can register with Y email and then use PayPal account registered with Z email.

A lot of members will use a separate email address for Paypal than they use for online forms, subscriptions, memberships, etc for the very same reason as you quote - to prevent fraud, I do that myself.

TBH, and I'm not biased in any way, XenForo provides the software, it does not provide the management of your/our forums, it's a bit like buying a car, the manufacturer/dealer might sell you the car, however it's up to you how you drive it.

I'd like to add my 2p to this.

It should be possible to sign up and pay with different email addresses.

It should not be possible to purchase and cancel a subscription n times within a specified time period.
