I need to move my 500k+ posts forum to new server and just wondering whether it could run on good shared hosting or VPS only?
I have about 400-500 users online at the time.
What do you think is most that shared hosting could run?

I had a horrible experience with shared hosting with much less users than that.

I would get a VPS with more RAM than the size of the database. I think that might be a decent rule of thumb. It all depends on the number of active users of course.

I am running a few forums on the same litespeed based shared hosting account, and they are quick and reliable. This is on a shared reseller account at mddhosting, and I have no complaints at all. One of them has:

The only thing I CAN'T do is use elasticsearch and the related Xenforo upgrade to support it. That would require a vps (or better) with higher access.

If you're looking at shared hosting, just make sure to ask about any database size limits they might have, if it's not spelled out plainly somewhere. A lot of them have a GB limit, and if your db is near or over that....
