DEMO
Downloads Manager adds a downloads section to your XenForo forum, for communities that share mods, tools, asset packs or software. Each download keeps a full version history, and each version can hold several files: uploads, links to GitHub releases or other external URLs. Members find downloads by category, rate and review them, and comment underneath, while you decide who can download what with permissions, passwords, reactions and other gates. Files can be scanned for viruses before anyone downloads them.
Features
Downloads and versions
- Every download keeps its versions, each with its own release notes, changelog, files and download count
- Several files per version, each with its own label and order: a Windows build, a macOS build and a sample project side by side
- History, Updates and Reviews tabs on every download page
- Schedule a download or a new version to publish at a set time
- Save a download as a draft and finish it later
- Cover banner you drag into position, plus a square icon for lists and widgets
- Prefixes, tags and custom fields per category, so each upload form asks for what that category needs
- Downloads resume where they stopped, through HTTP range requests
External files
- Add a file by URL instead of uploading it: either keep a copy on your server, or link to it and let the original host serve it
- Recognises GitHub release assets and S3-compatible storage URLs (AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, Wasabi), and accepts magnet links when you allow them
- Each URL is checked when it is added, for reachability, size and file type
- Dead link probing: linked files are checked every 12 hours, flagged after a failure and hidden after 3 in a row, and the author is alerted. Recovered links come back by themselves
- Off by default. Choose the mode and allowed sources under options, override them per category, and grant the Upload from external URL permission
Dependencies
- List the other downloads, or external tools, a download needs, with a note for each
- Dependencies show on the download page with whether the viewer can get each one
- A Required by list shows every download that depends on this one
Download protection
- Category permissions inherit down the tree, with separate permissions for viewing and for downloading
- Criteria gates: require a post count, trophy points, account age, user group or any other user criteria, set up once in the AdminCP and picked per category or download
- Password gate: the author sets a password and an optional hint
- Reaction gate: members react to the download to unlock it. It can re-lock when the reaction is removed
- CAPTCHA for guest downloads, every time or only when they hit the rate limit
- Rate limits per hour for guests and members, with burst allowances, overridable per category
- Hotlink protection with a list of allowed referrers
- Bandwidth caps, site-wide and per user group
- Authors and team members always get past their own gates
Teams and sharing
- Add co-authors to a download with any of five rights: Edit details, Upload files, Manage files, Manage versions and Manage team
- The primary author is marked with a crown
- Share tokens: give someone a link to one download, or one version, without opening the category. Links expire after 1 hour to 30 days, can be single-use or locked to the first IP, and can be revoked
Reviews and comments
- Star ratings and written reviews, from members who have downloaded the file
- Authors and team members reply to reviews in place
- Helpful voting, with upvotes only or upvotes and downvotes, and a Most helpful sort
- Custom review fields per category, and optional anonymous reviews
- Comments under each download, with attachments, mentions and reactions
- Or start a discussion thread automatically in a forum of your choice, with your own title format, first post, prefixes and author. Comments and threads can both be on at once
Virus scanning
- Scan uploads with ClamAV, VirusTotal or both. Scans run in the background, so uploads are never kept waiting
- A file stays unavailable until it passes. Any engine reporting an infection quarantines it
- If a scan cannot finish, hold the file for a moderator or release it with a warning, your choice
- Members see a scan badge on each file, and moderators see each engine's verdict
- Virus scans page with scan states, recent activity, engine health and a detection self-test
- Scan on, off or by the site setting, per category. Rescan old files on a schedule
- Optionally quarantine password-protected archives, and limit scanning by file type or size
- With our Quarantine add-on installed, scan with the engines set up there instead
- Off by default, and VirusTotal only sends file hashes unless you allow uploads
Moderation
- Approval per category for new downloads, versions, reviews and comments, through the native approval queue
- One moderation queue for downloads awaiting approval, quarantined files and dead links, in the AdminCP and on the front end for moderators of each category
- Quarantined files open to the evidence: every engine's verdict and signature
- Soft delete with a recovery window, inline moderation, warnings, reports and edit history
- Audit log of every change to downloads, files, gates, teams and settings, kept for 365 days by default, with IPs anonymised after 90
Analytics
- Analytics for each download: daily downloads, reactions, reviews and comments over 7, 30 or 90 days
- Author analytics across all of a member's downloads, with their top performers
- AdminCP dashboard: downloads served, an activity chart, scan health, storage by category, what needs attention and recent activity
Browsing and discovery
- Category tree with Font Awesome icons, colours and covers
- Search downloads, comments and reviews
- What's new, watched categories and downloads, Your downloads and Latest reviews
- Widgets: Category grid, Featured downloads, New downloads, New updates, Recent reviews, Statistics, Top downloads and Top rated
- Featured and trending downloads, news feed, activity summary and sitemap entries
- Paste a download link in a post to embed it, or use the Embed download button
Permissions and options
- Separate user and moderator permissions for downloads, comments and reviews, set per category
- On install each permission copies the matching forum permission, so groups get what they already have in your forums
- Options are split into tabs: General, File policy, File preview, Virus scans, Protection, Comments, Reviews, Discussion, and Audit and privacy
- Allowed file types per category, a list of dangerous extensions blocked everywhere, and size limits per file, per version and per download
Other features
- Preview text, images, audio, video, PDFs and archive listings before downloading, turned on per category
- Uploads are checked for size, file type, file signature and zip bombs
- REST API for categories, downloads, versions, files, comments, reviews and share tokens
- Webhooks for downloads, versions, gates, share tokens, reviews and teams
- Command-line tools for health checks, rescans, orphan clean-up and purging old history
- Files are stored through XenForo's file system, so a remote storage adapter in config.php covers them too
- Responsive on mobile, and works in light and dark styles
FAQ
Does it replace or need XenForo Resource Manager?
No to both. Downloads Manager has its own tables, categories, permissions and URLs, so you can run it alone or alongside Resource Manager. Importing from Resource Manager is handled by a separate importers add-on.
Where are files stored?
In XenForo's internal data folder by default. If you point internal data at S3 or another remote store in config.php, downloads go there too, with nothing else to set up.
Does it contact any outside service?
Only when you turn on a feature that needs one. VirusTotal receives file hashes, and the files themselves only if you allow uploads. Adding or probing an external file sends a request to that URL. Nothing else leaves your server.
Can members download from a version that is not the latest?
Yes. The History tab lists every published version with its own files.
Is there branding, and can I remove it?
Yes, a small footer credit. Removing it is free: switch it off with the Remove branding option in [MC] Core Library.
What happens when I uninstall?
Every download, version, file, review and comment is removed, along with the add-on's tables and stored files. Discussion threads it created in your forums are kept.
