# AIXF: Per-Forum Maximum Message Length — Q&A
### Q: What happens if I leave the per-forum field blank or set it to 0?
A: The forum inherits the global maximum from
Options → Messages → Maximum message length.
---
### Q: Can I make one forum longer than the global maximum?
A: No. The global maximum is the ceiling. To allow one forum to have a higher limit, raise the global, then lower the other forums individually.
---
### Q: What value should I use for most forums?
A: 10,000 characters is the recommended cap for general discussion forums.
---
### Q: What value should I use for my special “long content” forum?
A: Set the global maximum to a high value (e.g., 50,000) and leave this forum at
0
(inherit global) or explicitly set it to 50,000.
---
### Q: What happens if I set the global to 50,000 and forget to lower other forums?
A: Every forum will then allow up to 50,000 characters. This is usually not desirable.
---
### Q: Does this affect private conversations (DMs)?
A: No. This add-on only applies to forum posts (threads, replies, edits).
---
### Q: Will this impact performance?
A: Posts with tens of thousands of characters are heavier to store, search, and moderate. That’s why it is recommended to keep most forums at a lower cap.
---
### Q: Where do I configure this per-forum field?
A:
- ACP → Forums → Nodes
- Select a forum node
- Scroll to Advanced options
- Set Per-forum maximum message length
