Classifieds: buy, sell & trade with offers, tracked deals and seller reputation [Paid] 1.7.1

No permission to buy (€49.00)
@adwolf1 That settles it, thank you, and the option you suggested is the right call.

What I will build:

  • A posting fee per category, set separately for For sale, Wanted and Trade. Your recruiter running a job board and somebody asking for a small part are then not charged the same thing, and 0 anywhere means free, so a board can charge for sale ads and leave Wanted open.
  • A "Discount on the posting fee, in percent" permission per user group. Highest across all of a member's groups wins, primary and secondary alike, and 100 means free.
  • A board setting for whether renewing an expired listing is charged again, off by default. Small boards charge once, boards running it as a revenue stream charge every run.

All of it rides on the payment profiles your board already has, and a listing only goes public once the provider says paid.

One thing I will not move: hiding the condition field per category was promised in this thread first and it is a small one, so it goes in ahead of this. Both are aimed at the same release.

SenseiXS updated Classifieds: buy, sell & trade with offers, tracked deals and seller reputation with a new update entry:

1.7.0: charge to post, per listing kind and per user group

1.7.0. Categories can charge to post, with a price per listing kind and a discount per user group, and they can stop asking for the item condition.
  • A category can stop asking for the item condition. A switch on each category, on by default. Turn it off where condition means nothing, for a service, a job ad or a digital item, and the field disappears from the posting form and from the listing itself. Nothing already filled in is lost. Switching every condition off in the...

1.7.0 is on the store, and both things promised in this thread are in it.

The condition field, per category

DocKnight, this was yours. Every category now has a switch for it, on by default. Turn it off where condition means nothing, for a service, a job ad or a digital item, and the field disappears from the posting form and from the listing itself. Nothing already filled in is lost, and it comes straight back if you turn the switch on again. Switching every condition off in the Admin CP also removes the field everywhere now, rather than leaving you the empty dropdown you found.

Paying to post

adwolf1, this is what you settled last night, built as described.

Each category carries three prices, one for For sale, one for Wanted and one for Trade. 0 means free, which is where every category starts, so nothing changes on your board until you set a price. Your recruiter pays for a job ad while somebody asking for a small part does not, in the same category.

The discount is a numeric permission, "Discount on the posting fee, in percent". XenForo keeps the highest value across all of a member's groups, primary and secondary alike, so the best group a member belongs to wins, and 100 means free. Tick Unlimited and that group posts for nothing.

Charging again on renewal is a board setting, off by default, exactly as you suggested.

A listing in a category that charges is saved but held back. The member goes through the payment profiles your board already has, and the listing is published the moment the provider says paid, with its expiry clock starting then rather than when it was saved. Walk away from the payment and it waits under Awaiting payment in My listings, to be paid for later or deleted, and it is swept up after a number of days you choose. A refund or a chargeback takes the listing off the market without destroying it. While it waits, it is visible only to its owner and to staff: not in search, no slot used in the member's active listing allowance, and no offers on it.

If no payment profile is active on the board, nothing is charged whatever the categories say, and listings are published as they always were.

On the demo

There is a new Services category. It asks for no condition, a Wanted ad in it is free, and posting an offer costs five euros, so you can walk the whole thing including the payment page. Every other category is still free, so you can also just post normally.

Still on the list

Miles instead of kilometres with a unit and currency default that follows the board, the custom field suggestion list that covers the screen on a phone, quantities with a sale taking one off the count, and one more level of nesting drawn like XenForo's node list. Same as before, say so if the order is wrong for your forums.

Looking really good tbh. Think I'm going to buy this add-on to test it out.

Only problem I have is that I already have an add-on so I would somehow migrate my current listings to this version...

duderuud thank you, and that is the right question to ask before buying rather than after.

There is no importer today. I am not going to pretend otherwise, and I would rather write the one you need than watch you copy listings across by hand.

Tell me which add-on you are on and I will look at how it stores its data. XenForo has a proper framework for this, so what you would get is a real importer under Tools, Import in the Admin CP rather than a script someone runs for you once: it works in steps, it can be stopped and resumed, and it keeps a map between the old identifiers and the new ones so that attachments and links follow instead of pointing at nothing afterwards.

What normally carries across cleanly: the category tree, listings with their price, currency, description and photos, who posted each one and when, and whether it is sold. What never carries across is anything that exists on one side only, and I would tell you plainly what gets left behind before you run a single row rather than after.

Two things worth knowing. The import does not have to happen at the same moment as the purchase, so you are not deciding both at once. And it should be run first against a copy of your board, which is what I would do with you before anything touches the live one.

I have moved data out of another developer's add-on into one of mine before, so this is not a promise in the air.

Welcome aboard, and thank you.

Send whatever you have. What makes the importer quick to write, if you can get at it:

  • the add-on's name and version, and the prefix its tables use
  • SHOW CREATE TABLE for its listings and its categories tables, which tells me more than any description could
  • roughly how many listings, categories and photos you are carrying across
  • whether its photos are XenForo attachments or files it stores its own way

If digging that out is a nuisance, the name and version alone is enough to start. I will tell you what will not survive the crossing before you run anything, not after.

Partial review of patch to fix mobile issues tested on Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra:
  • Details about a listing still do not appear below the pictures but instead appear at the bottom of the page.
  • Still if a user or category has multiple listings and the More from "Username" or More in this category sections appear at the bottom/below the main listing, the pictures are large and when you touch one with your finger you lose the ability to keep scrolling down. Even if you were just in the process of the trying to scroll to the bottom.
    • On desktop you can replicate this also by placing your mouse over the image and trying to scroll. You lose all scroll ability. I think it has something to do with the quick view wanting to take over.
  • This still is happening - when people use a custom field and enter multiple options, the system wants to suggest options to you. On mobile this suggestion list, when it pops up, will block most of the screen. If you try to scroll it then moves down and blocks the keyboard.

Thanks for the updates, @SenseiXS.
Is there a way for moderators to freeze and remove a listing from view? Our hobby is rife with counterfeits and we occasionally have sellers attempting to list a counterfeit in our marketplace. We need to be able to block the seller from deleting or editing the listing while we investigate, and we also need to hide it from other shoppers so they don't get scammed. If it does turn out to be a counterfeit and we want to graveyard it for reference would building a hidden category for it be the best solution? Would moving it to a hidden category allow us to do all of the above?

Related to that, we have reports of members being able to still see the Classified listings of sellers who are on their ignore list (whom they are usually ignoring specifically because they don't want to do business with that person).

SenseiXS updated Classifieds: buy, sell & trade with offers, tracked deals and seller reputation with a new update entry:

1.7.1: details under the price on a phone, thumbnails no longer freeze the page

1.7.1. Two phone fixes: the details now sit right under the price, and touching a thumbnail no longer freezes the page.
  • The details of a listing now sit right under the price on a phone. 1.6.0 moved them out of the bottom of the page but left them below the whole sidebar, which on a narrow screen still means a long way down. They now come immediately after the price and the buttons, with nothing wedged in between.

1.7.1 is on the store. DocKnight, two of your three are fixed, and you were right about both, including the cause of the second one.

The details on a phone

You were right that 1.6.0 did not fix this. It moved the details out of the very bottom but left them under the whole sidebar, which on a phone is still a long way down. I had the measurement in front of me when I shipped it, the details sat at 1715 pixels against the price at 874, and I did not look hard enough at my own numbers. They now come straight after the price with nothing wedged in between.

The reason my test did not catch it is worth saying out loud: it checked that the stylesheet contained the ordering I had written, not where things actually landed on a screen. It has been replaced with one that drives a real browser at 390 pixels wide and reads the position of every block. I then broke the fix four different ways, including putting back the exact 1.6.0 arrangement, and confirmed the new test fails each time. It would have caught this.

The thumbnails that swallow the scroll

Your instinct about quick view was exactly right, and it was not the carousel at all.

There is an invisible Quick view link lying across the middle of every thumbnail. It is transparent but it was still catching the pointer, so a finger landing on a photo opened the quick view overlay, and that overlay stops the whole page scrolling until you tap back outside. That is your "till you unclick back outside of it", and it is also why you could reproduce it with a mouse. I had started down the wrong road fixing the carousel's wheel handling before I measured what was actually under the finger.

It is now inert while it is invisible and only becomes clickable once it is really shown, so Quick view still works as before if you mean to use it.

The custom field suggestion list

Not fixed, and I am not going to pretend it is close to done. It is next. It also turns out somebody else arrived this week with 6500 models in a single field, so this one has two forums behind it now rather than one, which is how it should be prioritised.

St. James, on freezing a listing

Half of what you need exists today and half does not, so here it is plainly.

What works now: a moderator with the approve and unapprove permission can unapprove a listing. It immediately disappears from the marketplace, from search and from everyone else's view. The staff can still see it, so it is not lost.

What does not work: the seller can still edit it and still delete it. Nothing stops them wiping the evidence the moment they realise they have been spotted. For a market with counterfeits in it that is the half that actually matters, and you have put your finger on a real gap rather than a missing setting.

So that is what I am building: a moderator hold that freezes a listing in place. Hidden from buyers, editing and deleting refused for the seller with a plain reason shown, and the staff keeping full access while they look into it. Lifting the hold puts it back exactly as it was.

On the graveyard idea: a hidden category does work today, because view permissions are set per category, so one that only the staff can see is a few clicks. It is just not airtight on its own at the moment, since an unfrozen seller can move or delete the listing before you get there. Hold first, then file it wherever you like, and the two together give you what you described.

And the ignore list

You are right, and it is worse than a bug: the add-on does not consult the ignore list anywhere at all. Somebody who has told you they want nothing to do with a seller still gets that seller's listings in their face. That is going in with the moderator hold.

No date on either, but they are the next two things I touch.

If we're not one of those two, then we're the third. I am struggling to understand why anyone would want that feature. If we have a limited number of descriptive types we just use a prefilled drop-down menu field. We had entire paragraphs in the custom field drop-down (and members complain that the character limit is too small by half so it could have been even more laughable). We actually need rich text fields so they can write more details.

Speaking of drop-down menus,
is it possible to have the Classifieds search filters be multi-choice tick boxes rather than a drop-down? Shoppers want to be able to select multiple categories or filter criteria to browse all at once, but exclude certain other variables, and there are so many variables it gets tedious to repeat searches one at a time.
i.e. looking for a 60-65cm doll body for sale or trade in Europe or the UK in tan or grey resin, but not white or cream resin. This is a category, child category, size choice, location choice, color choice, and sale type choice. Multi-choice would make that a lot easier.

A moderator-only listing freeze is exactly what we need, thank you! Perhaps this could be in the Staff Tools menu, so Feature Listing or Freeze Listing? In the meantime I'll build a hidden icebox category for them.
