Classifieds: buy, sell & trade with offers, tracked deals and seller reputation [Paid] 1.7.1

SenseiXS updated Classifieds, give your community a marketplace it'll actually use with a new update entry:

1.5.3: trades, a deal tracker and a price guide built from real sales

This update brings Classifieds from 1.5.0 to 1.5.3. What each release added:

1.5.3. Featured listings shown once, clearer offer buttons, a fuller seller header, and a round of wording and phone fixes.

1.5.2. Three fixes after 1.5.1: the safety notice, a waiting period that explains itself, and the price field on phones.

1.5.1. Contact seller works again on boards where members may not start conversations, with new waiting and safety controls and a listing that answers...

Random questions, and sorry if it was already asked/answered.

I am considering buying this addon and I run a forum for coin buyers and sellers but most sales are done locally or between members who know each other.

1. Did nested categories and subcategories get added? I would require this.
2. Possibly a custom request - can we, by permissions, get a TOTAL number of active listings a user can have?

Example - A new registered user under X days old signs up. They are only allowed to post one item for sale. This number could be increased overtime based on reputation, time, or other factors not considered yet.

Get a few good reviews? Your total can increase. Get some bad ones, maybe it decreases?

SIDENOTE NOT RELATED TO THIS PRODUCT: I saw some of your other addons. That card/video game addon is very neat. How much to get you to build me something similar but for people to record their coin collections? (focusing on US coins only right now) If at all interested in considering this further feel free to send me a DM.

Good questions, and no, neither has been asked in this thread.

1. Nested categories

Yes, since 1.4.0. A category can hold subcategories, one level deep, and the permissions travel down with them: view, view other members' listings, post, make offers, propose trades and contact the seller are all set per category, the same way you set forum permissions. So a Local pickup only section, or a high value section limited to a trusted group, is a few clicks. Browsing uses XenForo's own category tree in the sidebar, parents fold open, counts sit in the labels, and picking a category filters the listings without a page reload.

If you need more than one level for a coin forum, say so, it is a reasonable thing to ask for.

2. A total number of active listings

Already in, as a user group permission: Maximum active listings, 0 meaning unlimited. Like XenForo's own numeric permissions, the highest value among a member's groups wins. It counts only what is actually on the market, so sold, expired and withdrawn listings do not hold a slot, and a member who reaches the cap is told so and that closing one frees a slot.

Your example already works today, with XenForo's own promotions rather than custom code: a New seller group with the cap at 1, an Established seller group with it at 10 or 20, and a user group promotion on days registered, or messages posted, that moves them across. Nothing to maintain by hand.

What you cannot do yet is drive it from marketplace reputation, because a promotion cannot read the seller rating. That is the right way to build what you are describing, and it is on my list: exposing the seller's rating, the number of completed deals and the number of reviews as user criteria, so promotions can use them exactly like trophy points. Then good reviews really do raise the allowance. If you pick the add-on up and want that, say so in this thread, it helps me order the work.

Two more things that fit a forum where people mostly deal locally or with people they know: each group also has a photo cap, a highest allowed price and separate permissions for For sale, Wanted and Trade listings, a brand new account can be made to wait a set number of hours before it may contact a seller, and a deal that ends with a handshake is closed as handed over in person, which still produces the two way review.

On the sidenote

Thank you. A collection tracker for US coins is a different shape from the card one, with grading, mintmarks and series completion rather than sets and rarities, but it is a shape I enjoy. Send me a DM with what you would want recorded and how you picture the pages, and I will tell you what it would take.

Good timing. The demo had been seeded with a single photo per listing, which is why you could not find a gallery anywhere. I have just given several listings four photos each, including the one you had open:

What more than one photo looks like: the first one fills the stage with a small counter in the corner, the others sit under it as thumbnails, and the whole set opens in XenForo's own lightbox, so the arrows, the swipe on a phone and the filmstrip are the ones your members already know. On the browse page, a card with several photos carries a little camera chip with the count, which you can see on the grid at https://demo.xen-support.com/classifieds/ now that six listings have one.

Worth knowing for a coin forum: the photos are XenForo attachments, so they obey your attachment settings, get thumbnails, and are deleted with the listing. How many a member may attach is capped in two places, a board option and a per user group permission that overrides it, so a new member can be held to two photos while your regulars get ten.

When you edit the Listing types allowed here: in a Category and you save it, and then go back into that same category, it does not save your selections.

Found it, fixed it, and 1.5.4 is on the store.

What was happening: the form kept any partial choice, but ticking all five kinds was quietly stored as "no restriction at all". That is the same rule in practice, since a category with no restriction accepts everything, but the form then came back with every box empty, which reads exactly like a setting that refuses to save. If you ticked a subset and it also came back empty, say so and I will keep digging, because that path saves correctly here, in the browser and in the tests.

In 1.5.4 the category stores what you ticked, full stop. Tick all five and all five are there when you come back. Leave them all empty and the category still accepts every kind, as the help text under the field says. Categories you had already narrowed are untouched by the upgrade.

Thanks for reporting it with the screenshot and the exact steps, that is what made it a ten minute job.

Format issue on mobile:
  • On PC or wide screen it shows the details right under the pictures which is nice.
  • On mobile/smaller screens the details appear all the way at the bottom. Could we get their location changed to always be near the pictures/price?
Thank you.

Also, I would like to talk about this since I am a little confused / it does not seem to be the most intuative.

If NO checkmarks are checked then no listings should be able to be posted in that category. No check marks making it allow all listings, as well as all check marks allowing the same thing may need another look?

Now, why wouldn't I want a listing in a category- Simple. Now that there can be nested sub-categories, maybe I don't want the parent category to hold listings.

Example:

Coins & Precious Metals (parent) (NO POSTING ALLOWED SO WE UNCHECK ALL THE OPTIONS)
  • US Coins (POSTING ALLOWED SO WE CHECK ALL THE OPTIONS)
  • World Coins (POSTING ALLOWED SO WE CHECK ALL THE OPTIONS)
Please let me know what you think.

Respectfully,

Dan

I think there might also be an issue with permissions.

Example:
  • I am a member of two user groups:
    • Registered (primary)
    • Administrator (secondary)
For testing purposes I set Registered users to only be allowed 1 listing at a time. Administrators still set to 0 for unlimited.

I could only post one listing. Shouldn't it took at all groups and then determine how many listings? What if I wanted to make a new secondary user group called Verified. These members could post 5 listings at a time. Would it still just default to the primary setting of 1?

0 should mean 0 since there is an unlimited option to check anyway.

This is something we'd like to be able to do as well. (I'm working on the same forum as armeleia and constants).

If we could have a parent category of Ball-Jointed Dolls with child categories for Full Dolls, Heads, Bodies, Parts then perhaps we could use the pricing guidelines feature. We turned it off because members were just getting annoyed with the inaccuracy of a median price quote for an area where these child categories could have items ranging from $5 to $5000.

Suggestions:
  • issues mentioned above ^
  • be able to remove or hide the item condition if a category does not require it. It does not seem like this field could be completely hidden and removed without making manual edits.
  • when adding a new item from inside a specific category it defaults to that specific category. Currently no matter where you are, when you go to add a listing it just defaults to the top category. (on smaller markets no big deal but having to find listing type every time could be problematic.
  • the ability to change km to miles. Or maybe a global setting EU vs US vs other supported countries, where if US is picked it defaults all currency and locations to USD and miles/that countries equivalent.
  • the ability to set a global expire value on all items in the store.
    • lets say 30 days it auto expires and hides items until the original poster goes in and just "refreshes" it. At which point it becomes active again.
  • the ability to set quantities and on a "successful sold" if quantity is > 1 remove 1 from quantity but don't "sell" the entire listing.
  • the ability to further nest categories as will as a better visual indicator of parent to child relationships.
    • I get not allowing unlimited nesting but even one more layer would be beneficial. If the design and visual indicators looked like it did in the native xenforo node list that would be amazing.
  • various visual issues need fixing on mobile.
    • when people use a custom field and enter multiple options, the system wants to suggest options to you. On mobile this suggestion list, when it pops up, will block most of the screen. If you try to scroll it then moves down and blocks the keyboard.
    • when filtering, if you pick to filter by km(distance) the block to enter that value is offscreen.
    • when looking at a users listing and they have more listings it displays a carousel at the bottom. When scrolling with your finger if you happen to click inside the carousel it prevents scrolling from continuing till you unclick back outside of it.

1.6.0: container categories, posting starts where you came from, mobile fixes

1.6.0. Categories can now be pure containers, posting from a category starts you in it, and the listing page reads right on a phone.

1.6.0 is on the store, and most of this list is in it.

Categories that hold nothing but other categories

Every category now has a switch, "Members may post listings in this category", on by default. Turn it off and the category still shows in the tree, still groups its children and still keeps anything already filed in it, but it stops being offered as a place to post and nothing new can land there.

DocKnight, that is your Coins & Precious Metals over US Coins and World Coins, set in one click rather than by unticking listing kinds. St. James, it is your Ball-Jointed Dolls over Full Dolls, Heads, Bodies and Parts too. You can see it running on the demo: Gaming is now a container with Consoles & handhelds and Controllers & accessories under it, and the post form shows the parent greyed out with the children selectable under it.

St. James, on the price guide, child categories should give it back to you. The guide only ever looks at the listing's own category and the categories under it, never at the whole tree, and it narrows further by the custom fields that are filled in. With $5 heads and $5000 full dolls in separate child categories the median stops being the nonsense you were seeing.

Posting from inside a category starts you in that category

Open a category, press the post button, and the category is already picked. A container is never pre-picked, so you land on the form with the choice still open rather than filed somewhere you did not choose.

The three phone problems

The listing page now reads photos, then the price and the buttons, then the details, then the rest. The details no longer sit at the bottom under the whole sidebar.

A finger swiping up or down over the photo carousel scrolls the page again. Sideways still moves through the photos.

The location and distance filter stacks into two full width rows on a narrow screen, so the distance box is no longer pushed off the edge.

The listing allowance

DocKnight, this one is XenForo's own rule rather than mine, and my wording sent you the wrong way.

For every numeric permission XenForo looks at all of a member's groups, primary and secondary alike, and keeps the highest value. If any group has Unlimited ticked, Unlimited wins outright. A permission you never touched reads as 0, which is why 0 cannot mean "no listings at all": every group that has never seen the setting would be locked out.

So your Registered at 1 and Administrator at 0 gave you 1, because 0 was not a bigger number, it was "nothing set here". Tick Unlimited on Administrator and you get unlimited. Add a Verified group at 5 and a member in Registered plus Verified gets 5. Primary and secondary make no difference.

The behaviour has not changed in 1.6.0, but the labels have: the three numeric permissions now say "tick Unlimited for no cap" instead of "0 = unlimited", which is what misled you.

The global expiry is already there

Admin CP, Options, Classifieds: set how many days a listing stays on the market. A listing past that date goes to Expired and leaves the market, and its owner gets a Renew button on it that puts it straight back on sale for another full run, with nothing for you to approve. There is a separate bump, with its own cooldown, for pushing a listing back up without waiting for it to expire.

Still to come, in the order I plan to do it

1. Hiding the condition field per category. You are right that it is all or nothing today, and switching every condition off in the Admin CP leaves an empty dropdown rather than no field. This is the next one.
2. Miles instead of kilometres, with a unit and currency default that follows the board rather than being set listing by listing.
3. The custom field suggestion list that covers the screen on a phone and then hides the keyboard when you scroll it.
4. Quantities, where a sale takes one off the count instead of closing the listing.
5. One more level of nesting, with the tree drawn the way XenForo draws the node list.

If the order is wrong for your forums, say so in this thread. It is what I sort the work by.

Thanks a lot. Love the update and will test it out here shortly. I appreciate you listening to concerns.

Looks interesting! I couldn't tell if this was implemented already, but would love to see:

* an optional "pay-per-post" capability, by category and usergroup
ie, so if i person is a member of a certain usergroup, they have to pay $X to post their listing, different usergroups should have to pay different amounts.. or $0 if they are in a super-special group.

* The price the user pays to post should also be different depending on the item category (ie, if you are selling a car it should cost more to post than a toaster.)

If those features were implemented, we could easily justify paying for this add-on.

DocKnight thank you, and do say if anything in it behaves differently on your board than it does here.

adwolf1, neither of those is in the add-on today, so no, you are not missing a setting. Here is where it actually stands and how I would build it, because the half that normally takes the longest is already done.

What is already there

The add-on is already wired into XenForo's own payment system. Featured listings are sold through a purchasable, so they go through whichever payment profiles your board has set up, PayPal, Stripe or anything else, and the listing is only promoted when the provider's callback comes back paid. Refunds and reversals are handled by XenForo's payment log like any other purchase.

A posting fee would be a second purchasable on that same rail rather than a new payment system, which is why this is a reasonable thing to ask for rather than a rewrite.

How I would build what you described

Per category: a "Cost to post a listing here" field on every category, 0 meaning free. That is your car costing more than a toaster, set by the people who already manage the categories, and it inherits nothing from the parent so each child can carry its own price.

Per user group: a numeric permission, "Discount on the posting fee, in percent". XenForo keeps the highest value across all of a member's groups, primary and secondary, so the best group a member belongs to is the one that applies, and 100 means free. Your super-special group gets the permission at 100 and pays nothing, a trusted group might sit at 50, everyone else pays the full price. No custom priority rules to learn, it behaves like every other numeric permission on your board.

Posting: when a fee is due, the listing is saved but held back rather than published, the member is sent through the normal payment flow, and the listing goes live from the callback. Abandon the payment and it stays as an unpublished draft the member can come back to or delete, so nobody is charged for something that never went up and nothing half paid appears in the market.

Two things I would want decided before writing it

Is the fee once per listing, or does it come round again when an expired listing is renewed? Boards that use it as a serious filter usually want the second one, boards that use it to cover costs usually want the first.

Should a Wanted ad cost the same as a For sale ad? Charging somebody to say what they are looking for puts most people off, so my instinct is a separate price per listing kind, or simply free for Wanted, but it is your market.

Answer those two and tell me whether the per-group part being a discount rather than a flat amount per group works for you, since that is the part where I am following XenForo's rules rather than inventing my own.

I am not going to put a date on it in this thread. What I can tell you is that this is the first time pay-per-post has been asked for here, and that how far up the list it goes depends on how many people want it, so you saying so counts.

good question - what is easiest to implement? for me personally, a single fee would be fine, but I agree with you -- that a repeat payment if a listing gets renewed would be better for larger boards / people using it seriously to earn $$.... possibly make it an option?

Should a Wanted ad cost the same as a For sale ad? Charging somebody to say what they are looking for puts most people off, so my instinct is a separate price per listing kind, or simply free for Wanted, but it is your market.
Just like with the for sale, it depends on the kind of wanted. For instance, if a recruiter is using it as a job board, they would have no problem paying a fair bit for a listing. But someone looking for something small would be put off by a fee. So a per kind listing would probably be best.

Answer those two and tell me whether the per-group part being a discount rather than a flat amount per group works for you, since that is the part where I am following XenForo's rules rather than inventing my own.
a discount would work fine -- I agree if it allows you to leverage what XF already gives you built-in, it is probably faster, cheaper, and more reliable to use what exists!

I am not going to put a date on it in this thread. What I can tell you is that this is the first time pay-per-post has been asked for here, and that how far up the list it goes depends on how many people want it, so you saying so counts.
a reliable classified that can generate revenue per-listing, and is well supported is definitely needed in the world of XF ... look forward to seeing what evolves with the add-on!
