XFMG: No video downloads

It would be great if XenForo Media Gallery included an option to discourage direct downloading of uploaded videos, similar to how major platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok make it more difficult for users to save or redistribute content.

We understand that no solution can completely prevent someone from downloading a video once it has been streamed to a browser. However, there is a significant difference between making it easy for anyone to click "Download" and requiring technical knowledge or third-party tools.

For communities that invest heavily in original video content, this would help:
  • Better protect creators' original work from casual copying and unauthorized redistribution.
  • Encourage viewers to watch videos on the originating community, where they can participate in discussions and engage with the creator.
  • Preserve traffic, advertising value, and community engagement instead of allowing content to be easily reposted elsewhere.
  • Give site owners greater confidence in encouraging members and sponsors to upload exclusive content.
Even something as simple as supporting controlslist="nodownload" or providing an option to disable the browser's download control in the HTML5 player would be a worthwhile improvement. It wouldn't stop determined users, but it would provide the same level of deterrence that many major social media platforms already employ.

As more XenForo communities begin hosting original video content, having built-in options to discourage casual downloading would be a valuable addition to the Media Gallery.

Exactly!

Why does Xenforo not think it's important to offer us support from people stealing our video content?
