Why would anyone pay dedicated server money on "cloud forum" solutions?

37 Euros for a 3600 amd processor on Hetzner.

0 dollars if you use a cpanel free alternative, more if you use a paid one.
7 dollars if you use a shared one but i get being suspicious of it.

Why, would you pay in the upwards of a hundred dollars a month just to have 0 control over your own computing resources.

I swear, cloud forums have to be the biggest ripoff for tech ignorant people.

Here we go again..

You don’t seem to grasp the fact that not everyone cares about having control or has the technical knowlegde.

Instead of worrying about other people, mind your own business and live your own life. ;)

Can you please stop being one of these

Tell me which dedicated server manager you have that can magically pop up a new dedicated server with your preferred hardware within seconds to handle an incoming heavy load, and get billed just for the usage of it at the time (no setup fees, etc., and no early cancellation when you don't need it in 8 hours), and I'll be impressed. Or, one that has 20 data centers around the world and can build that same server in Europe if the primary traffic shot up regionally.

There are benefits to both.

I mean, you could still have a dedicated server and use AWS or the like as a secondary solution to what I just proposed.

Or are you just saying the Cloud-based solutions that XenForo offers? There are benefits to that too, like software being managed and repaired with hotfixes if there's a critical issue found, and I'm positive that they probably have the load balancing issues ironed out already (I might be wrong, but there has to be some kind of redundancy). Also, you don't need to learn Cloud-based computing, how to update your forum, etc., and can dedicate all your time to community growth.

Also my dad built our house.
Missing the point much? :p Do you build everything you use? Your car? Your fridge? The device you are using to post on this forum? How about that trivial little bit of kit passing the data from the device onto the next hop to this forum?

Nah, he's one of those kids with his own mindset and nothing else matters. His username doesn't do him honor. Or maybe it does since tea doesn't have much intellectual.

Management, simple as that.

Will Hetzner install the software for you? will they upgrade it for you? will they upgrade and install OS patches? will they backup your database?

Well yes, probably if you pay them to do that, but then it won't work out any cheaper.
There are lots of people who will want to run forums but won't have the technical knowledge to install them and maintain the OS etc.

I have always gone down the dedicated route, but if I chose not to I would fully expect to have to pay someone for the time that I spend managing our solution.

The freedom of choice is there to go down whichever route you want.

I also do all those things.

In my experience, there isn't much to maintain. You automate db backups, can automate software patches, assuming it isn't core content, maybe even that.

I have a functioning server , into which i haven't looked for weeke, and everything works fine. I already configured what i needed, the php extensions, the dns, some linux settings.

No way to do that on a cloud forum lest they offer it.

I like having control, and i dislike spending money.

And just because it works like this for you, doesn’t mean it works like that for everyone. You know, you’re not alone on this flat earth.

can automate software patches
Wait till one of your cPanel (paid panels) auto upgrades a package and discontinues support of the previous package that worked, breaking everything, as your site wasn't designed for that.

For instance, Plesk (owned by cPanel), pushed out PHP 8.3.14 on me and it broke the XF importers. They supposedly work just fine on 8.3.13, but, they removed it from packages you can install.

So, I need to build PHP from scratch to the version I need with all the libraries to support importers to import because I can't simply roll back an automatic update.

You know, just pay 400 dollars a month. Hell , 40k. Done.
