Existing upgrades and promotions will be fine as they criteria are used to determine whether the upgrade should happen, and won't undo it once the criteria change. You will likely need to re-populate the criteria on upgrades to re-select the equivalent criteria, but that should hopefully be relatively painless.

Losing this addon was a huge hit I'm still trying to recover from.
