significant drop in traffic and users

Hello
Hello everyone,

I’ve been running InterFans Forum since 2002, and I’ve recently experienced a significant drop in both user engagement and page views over the last year—something I’ve never encountered before.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could take a look and help identify any issues or changes that might be contributing to this decline. Any insights or suggestions would be incredibly valuable.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

I have also seen a decline and, as far as I know, there has been a strong shift in users from text content to audio and video content in this period, which may have accelerated the drop in website.
It may all depend on some problem with your site - which I know and appreciate, being Italian like you - but I would not rule out the reason I told you at the beginning.

Hi Francesco

I know about other forum about other teams also running xenforo which have not being experiencing such a drop in traffic.

It is really frustrating for me as I don’t get what is wrong with my forum/site

In April drop in users about 5k. But traffic from Google lost less than 0,5k. So your main lost was from other source. Direct? Social? Mails maybe? I didn't use google analytics for ages. Is it still possible there to split by source?

I'm not an expert, so don't trust my words )
October drop looks like you blocked a spider(s) or it(they) quit visit your site on it's own. I wouldn't worry about it much.
April drop is different. You lost visits as well as page views. It's either people started to visit the forum less, or a chunk of them gone.
Didn't you say in April, that Manchester United is the best team of all times? )))

In April 30% of regular visitors were lost. But that's not all. The reat 70% started to view 2-3 times less pages while visiting than before.
I would guess some major changes were made to the forum, like a new skin or extra adds.

Absolutely have not touched anything

Maybe Google algorithm updates:

March 2024 Core Update — March 5, 2024

Confirmed
Google released another core update, which rolled out over an unprecedented 45 days! The March 2024 Core Update integrated the Helpful Content Updates (HCU) into the core algorithms, and Google claimed that the latest changes will reduce unhelpful content in search results by 40%. MozCast temperatures spiked to 120.0°F on March 8 and topped 110°F on three other days in March.

And why other forums were not impacted?

Google released a large March core update.

Also, in totally unrelated news 🫢, Google and Reddit signed a licensing deal around the same tmme that prioritized Reddit user content in search results while giving access to Reddit's data for Google AI training.

Yes, but if this were the case, it is not clear why other sites were not touched but that of our friend @interforo was.

That’s not it.

It looks like a Google core update that caused the drop.

Especially considering the fact that there was a core update in March, August, November.

Then again in December.
