I'd like to add some real-world context as to why I believe this should be core functionality rather than something that requires a custom add-on.
We operate a large, long-established forum where members create image-heavy community threads every day. Some of these threads can run for months or years and contain hundreds or even thousands of posts and images.
Our members regularly share individual threads and updates from those threads to Facebook and other social networks.
The problem is that when they share a XenForo URL and the social network is given our generic sitewide OG image instead of one of the actual images from their content, the resulting social post is visually meaningless. It is essentially a generic logo attached to a link.
We've watched this happen in the real world.
A member shares his forum content to Facebook and gets virtually no engagement because the preview displays our generic logo. He then gives up on sharing the XenForo link and uploads his photos directly to Facebook instead. Suddenly he gets dozens of likes and comments, but the original community receives no link, referral traffic or exposure.
That's the real problem.
The member shouldn't have to understand Open Graph metadata, know how XenForo handles attachments, construct his social media post a particular way, or ask an administrator to modify his content.
It should just work.
Modern community platforms are competing with social networks for both content and traffic. When members voluntarily share their forum content on those networks, they're effectively promoting the community and bringing people back to it. The software should make that shared content as useful and visually representative as possible.
Ideally, I think the priority should be:
- A specifically selected/featured social image, if one has been set.
- An attachment or Media Gallery image associated with the specific content being shared.
- An appropriate attachment or Media Gallery image from elsewhere in the thread.
- The sitewide default OG image only when no usable content image exists.
Media Gallery images are particularly important here. An image shouldn't be excluded simply because the member inserted it from XenForo Media Gallery rather than uploading it as a traditional post attachment.
The sitewide OG image makes perfect sense as a fallback. I just don't think it should override actual visual content that exists within the thread.
With forums increasingly depending on members sharing content externally for discovery and referral traffic, I think automatic OG/Twitter image selection for normal discussion threads has become basic social-sharing functionality.
This isn't simply about making a social media post look prettier. It's about making it possible for members to effectively promote the content they're creating on XenForo communities and drive people back to those communities.
