XF 1.5 Newer New Post Chases Away Older New Post

One thing I've noticed is that when there's a new post (original or reply) to a thread, it gets listed in the New Posts section of the sidebar. But when someone else replies to that, that post gets a listing in the New Posts section, and THE FIRST LISTING GOES AWAY. This this a bug or a feature?

I would like the first (earlier) mention of a new post to NOT go away until it "ages out" at the bottom. By leaving it visible, it's easier to see which threads are "hot topics" right now.

Is there a way I can do this?

Only one post is shown per thread, which is always the latest post.

It would require custom development to change that.

Custom development as in an add-on? I think I'd like to try my hand at that myself. I'm a good C programmer, a fair HTML writer, and I've been swotting up on PHP and CSS.

I'd have to have access to the top-secret developer's documentation, though.
