Instead of being plain HTML, it would be great if custom fields display values were templates (including user and resource fields). In the case of a user field, it would have access to entity {$user}. In the case of a resource, {$resource}.
With this, we can do cool things like pull values from one custom field to compose another, use conditionals, etc. I think it should be automatically wrapped in contentcheck so that the field won't show if nothing is rendered, or at least have that option.
