Say you have:

reply one: 2 images embedded from imgur
reply two: 3 images embedded from imgur

When you click an image in reply #1 and you navigate with arrow keys, you'll only see the same two images.
I would like it a lot more if the image viewer continued into the next post, this would make browsing wallpaper topics/picture topics a lot more enjoyable.

Example of what I mean: https://forums.themavesite.com/threads/themavesite-wallpapers-general-1920x1080.5469/page-1228
(click an image and try going to the next one with arrow keys, you can't)

There is a checkbox "Lightbox displays all attached images on page" in the attachment options. I think it does what you suggest.

I found it by searching in the admin panel. However this seems to not work for me, could it be because the images aren't technically attached but embedded from imgur?

Try it yourself here:

Ideal behavior: you click on the Nissan and it shows you 1/20 (20 replies on that page), then you can navigate with arrow keys.

Above is set like that, but doesn't seem to be working for embedded images (from my imgur account)

@Mave it looks like this isn't possible for embedded external images. Only images attached directly to the thread/topic.

In XF 1.5.x I remember we didn't even get a lightbox for external embedded images, it just opened the image in a new window/tab.

At least in XF 2 you get a lightbox, but only in separate instances as you've mentioned.

The only workaround I can think of is to try this add-on by @AndyB to convert all external images to attachments: (which also does it automatically for new posts onwards)
