How to make posts look like vb/bb?

So with the whole user bit running along the side, as well as the little arrow pointing towards it.

I tried a few different methods and ended up repeating an image repeat-Y like so:

.messageList .message {
    background: url("styles/xendisconnect/xenforo/images/messagebg.png") repeat-y scroll -1px 0 transparent;
}

I have got most of it, but the padding is making things break. I am guessing I am missing something here...
