How do websites do that consistent player thing?

If you go to YouTube Gaming or Twitch, and you watch a stream... when you navigate away from the stream, the stream continues to play in a picture-in-picture box at the bottom of the screen. You navigate the website and it just sticks around. What kind of magic is this?

Is the entire website just loaded in JS, with prevent default link actions?

On Twitch, the stream player is a react component. When the route is changed, that component gets resized. Its state is handled with Redux.
