It seemed to persist after refreshing the page. Not done a huge amount of testing.

It seems each thread in the What'sNew list has a unique class name for that thread with the thread ID in it, eg js-threadListItem-228016

So there's a good chance the block will persist long term on the what's new page unless Apple resets the hidden items after a certain amount of time.
