In my experience it’s by selling upgraded accounts. Google is not so good any more. Or so easy,

Without an audience, you can't monetize because you don't have anyone to give you money, which ties your hands. Focus on building and growing a loyal audience, this will open your eyes to new ways of making money along the way and you'll benefit financially from the audience you have.

Ok - I have an active forum of three years so I think that’s an audience. How does that translate into monetising?

I had wondered about a sponsor but can’t think of one suitable. I’m really only looking to cover annual costs so maybe Google Adsense would be enough?

Add a private section to your forum for vip members. Letting them know that the money goes to paying the annual fees of hosting.
