April Fools Day ideas for forum

We try to play a joke on our forum members every year on April Fools day.

A trick, a harmless prank, a one day re branding, rewording old phrases, gag, logo change, etc.

We are fresh out of ideas. :)

What are you doing for your forum this year? Any suggestions? :)

Replace the root URL with some image.

FBI takedown Logo. (with a tiny link to the forums).
Whatever image is funny to your community.

What about some hack that when someone posts something, Xenforo adds some tacky image and text to their post as if they did it.
when they edit the post, the fake text and image are there, they edit it out, but it reappears again :)

I don't typically do anything, but this year I've been thinking of doing one I've done before on other sites.

A few years ago I created a forum notice that was displayed to all logged in members, and used their avatar as the image. It said something along the lines of "Welcome to our newest administrator, Username!", in huge block letters. It included a link that said something along the lines of "Please join us in congratulating Username". The link took them to a post that simply read "APRIL FOOLS!" in large red letters.

Also helps if you create a hidden forum for this, or at least a forum so that the post won't show up in what's new, etc...so they won't accidentally see the thread before the notice. I've found through the years that some members will never see a notice, regardless of how colorful it is or how long it's there. It's like they're blind to non-content areas of the site. I blame it on ads.

Announce a major new feature with screenshots and all, maybe even fake it a bit. Then "April Fool!"

(And thanks for reminding that next week is the day we get evidence that my allegedly hard-nosed accountant boss is actually a hilariously funny comedy writer when his April Fool's memo comes out. We all know what it is, save maybe some noobs, but they are soooooo worth waiting for.)

Post up some memes that are on purposely jokes.
Open up a new style sheet that is magenta and that doesn't fit the forum.

On the old forum I worked on, I used to post April Fools' Day threads announcing a ridiculous over-the-top change to the platform. One year, I made a fake mockup for a "redesign" of the forum.

This year, I'm thinking of making a thread announcing the addition of "Z Bucks": a new microtransaction currency for the forum that members can use to buy themselves trophies and username colours.

There used to be an addon for VBulletin that actually did that. No idea if it's still around, but I remember spending an entire weekend (10-13 years ago-ish) working on deploying it and only about 5% of the active community members actually used/redeemed the points. When we migrated to XF, we just dropped the whole system and I think only one person actually asked where it went.

A question comes to mind: do you really have such active forums that it's worth making April Fools' Day jokes? 😅

How did you do that?! 🤣
It's basically Unicode substitution in conjunction with a bit of JavaScript. If you Google 'flipped text' you should find a few generators along with the code required to spread mayhem within the hamster loving community should you wish :)

Thanks. For my topic there are plenty of April fool options - fake news stories about hamsters eg. But the upside down text is a good alternative when running out of ideas 😊
