I do localhost first but only because it allows me to update any edited templates using the compare function in Notepad++ and then it's much quicker to copy and paste those into my live site once it too has been updated.

I like the way you think, I however made the mistake of not keeping a record of recent template edits other than memory *facepalm*.... I am sure that I will bypass localhost due to "New shinny toy syndrome"
I do what I normally do. upload the files to my live site, install and make the necessary edits and changes while the users are still browsing my site.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo not another sodding upgrade.. waaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh there goes the next X weeks of my life just upgrading skins with stupid new template bits, CSS bits.. all to be completed just in time for the next upgrade!
