Add items to navigation

Is there a menu system, or do additional navigation links have to be coded into the template for the particular style?

As far as I know currently this can only be changed in the template "navigation".
But it's pretty easy and straightforward.

Is this still so? have I got to edit files to add a menu item? Is there no simple WYSIWYG menu builder like Wordpress has?

I suggest using this addon:

It allows you to add new nav items with nodes.
