18+ age verification pop-ups and new laws?

I'm seeing more and more sites with "18+" pop-ups. And I'm hearing rumblings about such requirements for "social media" sites.

Now... my forum's registration process already includes a birthdate question and screens for 18+ (built-in to XenForo).

But, I'm seeing (and talking about) pop-ups just to VISIT forums or websites as a visitor.

If this comes to be, or already "do be," how can I set that up - if need be.

Not sure how you would do it for visitors. Hopefully someone has some advice. I guess you could have a "front page" that comes up in front of your forum. And check the laws that apply to your site to see exactly what is expected. I know here in Canada my site (I host it domestically with a Canadian provider since 95 or something percent of members are Canucks) flies under the radar of a lot of current regulation because we are small and non-commercial.

Should be doable as an add-on, I would imagine, but I can't think of a way to do it out of box.

Such pop-ups do not work. Minors are used to clicking on confirm. Its a pointless exercise that does nothing more than keeping up appearances.
@Xon 's moderator Essentials lets you effectively block minors by banning their account AFTER they have filled in their age. And provide a gentle message to let the minor know that they can use their account after they have come of age. Almost all fall for that.

I do things a little different.
I make a private section for that with the rule that any adults only talk has to be inside the private section.
Unless you have your forum set to private.
I'd never allow porn on my forum ever.
On my forum i will ask for stories only just in case you have the media viewer set up for photos and videos to be viewed from the private section.
On bigfooty's forum they have rules where the avatar has to be free of people wearing bikinis, etc.

None on mine either. I used to have the rules so tight that I couldn't even post links to my own stories that were on an erotic site.

I'm also very strict with the way how people post up stuff.
We don't allow people to post up their private images because a) it could be embarrassing for them and b) if it gets out and goes viral people will see other people's private images.
We allow stories only.
We haven't had anything yet but we still have a private section.
