Control which user groups can view prefixed XenForo content, post replies or comments, and submit ratings or reviews.

Configure access separately for each prefix to restrict content viewing or participation without moving content to another forum or category. Optional integrations support Resource Manager, Quizzes, Lessons, and Toplists.

Features:

  • 🔒 View Restrictions: Limit which user groups can view the content of threads with specific prefixes.
  • 🔍 Optional Thread Hiding: Hide restricted threads from forum listings, forum last-post summaries, and featured content for visitors who do not satisfy their prefix viewing rules.
  • 💬 Reply Restrictions: Control which user groups are allowed to reply to threads based on the prefix.
  • 📦 Resource Restrictions: Limit resource viewing and separately control which groups can submit or update ratings and reviews.
  • 💬 Comment Restrictions: Choose which groups can comment on quizzes, quiz questions, courses, lessons, and toplists.
  • ⭐ Rating Restrictions: Configure rating and review access separately from viewing and commenting for supported content.
  • 🔧 Per-Prefix Settings: Configure permissions individually for each supported prefix.
  • 🧩 Multi Prefix Integration: Apply restrictions to threads and resources using the Multi Prefix add-on. Users must satisfy the restrictions of every assigned prefix.
  • 🔑 Bypass Permission: Allow selected user groups to bypass prefix-based access restrictions.
  • ⚡ Cached Settings: Prefix access settings are cached to reduce repeated database queries.

Supported Content Types:

  • 🧵 XenForo: Thread viewing and replies.
  • 📦 XenForo Resource Manager: Resource viewing, ratings, and reviews.
  • ❓ [XB] Quizzes: Quiz viewing, comments on quizzes and questions, and ratings.
  • 📚 [XB] Lessons: Course and lesson viewing, comments, and course ratings. Settings are configured on the course prefix.
  • 🏆 [XB] Toplists: Toplist viewing, comments and replies, and ratings.

Access Rules:

  • 🔑 Content Authors: Registered authors bypass prefix restrictions on their own content, subject to normal XenForo permissions.
  • 🔒 Existing Permissions: Prefix settings do not grant access that normal XenForo permissions deny.
  • 📦 Resource Bypass: Configure the resource bypass permission globally or for individual resource categories, separately from the thread bypass permission.
  • 🔑 Integration Bypass: Quizzes, Lessons, and Toplists each have their own bypass permission, configurable globally or for individual categories.
  • 📚 Course Access: Prefix settings preserve paid access, enrollment requirements, and lesson availability rules.
  • 🔗 Shared Toplists: Shared links remain subject to prefix viewing restrictions.
  • 💬 Resource Discussions: Replies in a resource's discussion thread follow that thread's prefix settings. The resource's rating restriction applies to ratings and reviews.

Useful for:

  • 🔒 Member Discussions: Restrict viewing of selected prefixed threads to chosen member groups.
  • 💬 Controlled Replies: Keep discussions readable while limiting replies to selected groups.
  • 🧩 Mixed-Access Forums: Apply different access rules to threads within the same forum through their prefixes.

FAQ:

  • ❓ Can restricted threads be hidden from forum listings? Yes. Enable Hide restricted threads from listings under Setup > Options > [XB] Thread Prefix Content Permissions. This option is off by default and applies to guests and registered users. It removes restricted ordinary and sticky threads from forum listings, hides their forum last-post summaries, and hides their featured entries even when marked Always visible. Authors and users with the bypass permission retain access. When a last-post summary is hidden, an older thread is not substituted. Thread counts and pagination totals are not recalculated, so pages may contain fewer threads or be empty.
  • ❓ What about new posts, search results, and widgets? XenForo's standard new-post lists, New posts and New threads widgets, search results, watched-thread lists, RSS feeds, and trending content already check viewing permissions. These checks remain active with the optional hiding setting turned off. Custom listings supplied by other add-ons may need separate integration. The optional hiding setting applies to XenForo threads; it does not add listing filters for resources, quizzes, courses, or toplists.
  • ❓ Are threads hidden from guests excluded from the sitemap? XenForo checks guest viewing permissions when rebuilding its sitemap, so threads denied by the prefix view restrictions are excluded on the next rebuild. Guests must not have the bypass permission.
