WORDIE DEMO
Blatchy Wordie
Today's word is waiting.
Wordie is the daily five-letter word puzzle, built native to your forum. Every member sees the same hidden word each day and has six guesses to crack it. Get a letter right in the right spot, the tile turns green. Get it right but in the wrong spot, yellow. Wrong letter, gray. Use what you learn from each guess to triangulate. Six tries, one shared answer, a new word every day.
How it works
A new word is picked at midnight in your forum's timezone. Members visit /wordie/ and start guessing. The on-screen keyboard tracks which letters they've tried. The board shows their guess history with colored tiles. Streaks reward members who come back every day, and break the moment they miss one — the loss-aversion engine that built Wordle into a billion-dollar acquisition, working for your forum instead of someone else's.
When a member solves (or runs out of guesses), a celebration modal pops with their stats — played, win rate, current streak, best streak — plus a shareable colored-square grid. One tap copies it to clipboard or posts it straight to a designated forum thread, where the rest of your community can banter about today's puzzle without spoiling the answer.
What's included
Why it works
Admin setup
Install the addon. The install routine creates the database tables and seeds the initial word pool. Set the three permissions on your registered user group. Optionally configure the share-to-thread feature: pick a thread, point Wordie at it, done. The daily picker runs on cron at 00:05 forum-time and the weekly pool refresh runs on Sundays at 03:00.
Permissions
Grant all three to registered users for the standard configuration. Members who lack permission see a clear "you don't have permission to play" message instead of a confusing login prompt.

What's included
- Daily shared puzzle — one word per day, same for every member, picked automatically by cron at midnight forum-time
- Word pool refreshed weekly — fresh five-letter words pulled from the Datamuse API on a configurable cron, with frequency filtering so only recognizably common English words appear
- Six guesses with full Wordle-style green/yellow/gray scoring
- On-screen and physical keyboard — keystroke tracking, letter-state highlighting, mobile-friendly tap targets
- Per-member stats — played, win rate, current streak, best streak, guess distribution
- Sortable leaderboard — current streak, best streak, total wins, or average guesses, with smooth client-side pagination
- Win modal — celebration headline that scales with guess count (Genius / Magnificent / Impressive / Splendid / Great / Phew), shareable colored grid, copy-to-clipboard, share-to-thread
- Share-to-thread — one-tap posts a celebration card to a designated forum thread with [SIZE], emoji headline, stats line, the colored grid, and a call-to-action link back to today's puzzle
- One share per puzzle — members can post their result to the thread once per day, no spam
- Master share toggle — admin option to disable the share-to-thread feature entirely if you don't want results posted to the forum at all
- Live countdown to the next puzzle — reinforces the daily-return loop
- How-to-play modal — accessible from the help icon for new players
- Per-forum sequence — each install runs its own independent puzzle numbering, no global cheat sheets, no spoiler risk from members who play other forums' versions
- Permission-gated — separate flags for playing, sharing to thread, and viewing the leaderboard, with appropriate fallback messages for guests and unauthorized members
- Pure word puzzle — no licenses, no API keys (Datamuse is free and unauthenticated), no tracking, no third-party services
Why it works
- The proven daily-return engine. Wordle was acquired by The New York Times for the low seven figures because the daily-puzzle format is the most reliable habit-builder in casual gaming. Wordie gives your forum the same engine, running on your domain, building loyalty to your community instead of theirs.
- Loss aversion drives streaks. Once a member has a 12-day streak, they don't miss tomorrow. The fear of breaking it pulls them back. The streak counter is the single most addictive number in the entire game.
- Spoiler-free social proof. The shareable colored grid tells the story of the deduction without revealing the answer. Members banter about strategy, brag about lucky early guesses, and watch each other's streaks climb — all in your forum threads, not someone else's app.
- Owned, not rented. Members play on your domain. Their stats live in your database. Their streaks belong to your community. Sharing posts to your threads. Every interaction reinforces that this is their forum's puzzle.
- Pure automation. No content authoring, no curation queue, no licensing fees, no API keys to manage. The cron generates today's puzzle, the word pool refreshes weekly from Datamuse, and the daily ritual runs forever.
