I think it is easy to forget that discussion forums started back in the Arpanet days. I was using it in 1970. Of course, technically, we were using terminals and connecting to a mainframe.

Since dues paying membership is a major part of the organizations business plan, the banners are a way to generate income. For me, the labor of maintaining it, is worth the effort. Others in the organization favor requiring membership to view content which I am opposed to.
