Hyperion, it is a good idea. One of the first things that I did at my forum was to set up a thread to catch classic shouts or convos in the SB and put them in that thread for the sake of posterity. Yes, sometimes the forum might lose out on interesting discussions due to having a Shoutbox but...

The only reason I know about XenForo is because of a news release that I read last week which reported the vBulletin lawsuit. Without this lawsuit, I might never have found about about XenForo, much less made the choice to move to it as a forum software.
