Thanks but as I said So the system sees the permissions as correct: for all users and nodes tested it shows the user as time-limited for general editing, but unlimited for first-post editing.

@Snog, Just to let you know that I've tried this mod – great idea by the way – but I'm having the exact same issues as @loplo and had to uninstall. When analyzing permissions the 'Final Value' for both 'time' permissions always matched what I expected, even for users with multiple usergroups...
