XenForo Friendly URL's, question for Kier or Mike

Just wondering what made either Kier or Mike include the Thread ID at the end of the Thread Title using a Dot (full stop) as a separator like this below.

threads/demo-thread.1728/

Why go with: .1728/

Just wondering what the thinking is behind it? And why you didn't use something like this instead.

threads/demo-thread/1728/

or this:

threads/1728/demo-thread/

Hello mrGTB,

How are you doing these days?
Did you get your laptop fixed?
Hope all is well.

All the best,

Floris

the only thing I don't like is the length of url titles

I hope there's a way to limit/crop the length of titles.

Example
instead of...
xenforo.com/community/threads/xenforo-friendly-urls-question-for-kier-or-mike.1889
I'd prefer....
xenforo.com/community/threads/xenforo-friendly-urls.1889

I prefer it at the end, your suggestions makes it seem that the post id is a directory and not an identifier.

If ".123/" is still too ambiguous they can always add a prefix such as ".post123/" ".msg123/" <-- That kind of structure is actually common since I've seen it in a lot of mods for other forum software.

Personally, I wish that the forum name was in the URL like the following (more hierarchical).

xenforo.com/community/xenforo-discussion-questions/xenforo-friendly-urls-question-for-kier-or-mike.1889/

That way if you were including your site in google custom search, you can simply use a wildcard to include threads in certain forums only.

For example, including all URLs that start with : xenforo.com/community/xenforo-discussion-questions/

I also feel that common words like "for" "or" "and" should be stripped out.

Hopefully there's a way to customize the URL format in the adminCP.

Use this instead to make more sense: /threadid-24/topic-title/

but if we apply that here, http://xenforo.com/community/threads-1889/xenforo-friendly-urls-question-for-kier-or-mike/

if someone goes to the http://xenforo.com/community/threads-1889/ - they will get a 404 error as that dir does not exist.

If implemented, have it chop the title at the end of a word and not in the middle of the word.

Other request: Based on a user group permission, allow the content creator to specify the title used in the URL, instead of having it auto-generated.

Yeah I know, I see your point.

I guess the best option might be to keep things short and remove all FOLDER based directories in the link structure that gives a 404 like you say if you visit: http://xenforo.com/community/threads-1889/ .

It seems the only option is to go File Based and not Folder Based with URL's. So yes, the Thread ID would have to be part of the Thread Title.

Here are some examples of better use to avoid the 404's using my PunBB forum as an example. Seeing as I've now activated File Based (Fancy) instead of Folder Based (Fancy) URL's today.

Forum Homepage:
Code:
http://mrgtb.com/

Viewing Forum:
Code:
http://mrgtb.com/forum1-members-lounge.html

Viewing Thread:
Code:
http://mrgtb.com/topic31-user-friendly-urls-more-ways.html

Take note that there are no /folders/ listed that would give a 404 if you tried to shorten the links.

Better without them being there completely in the first place I'd say if possible, with no redirects needed at all. Redirects only solves the problem created, why not fix the problem instead?

Seeing as XenForo is still under development.

Cause it's probably done that way for a reason.

Edit: Yep, seems to be that way. :)

For threads? That sounds like massive overkill to me.
Might be overkill, but if people want to use threads for articles and significant site content, it would make sense to be able to specify what the URL looks like for SEO and non-SEO reasons. Of course since we have pages and if a CMS will be in the works, then this would be less important.

After your multiple petitions for what you call a "better" URL structure, you're telling me not to complicate things?

Okay.

Personally, I would have called it "Forum Feedback about XenForo" for Mike and Kier to read and think about, maybe they missed something, who knows e.t.c.

But whatever you wish to label it, is fine by me! :D

I still think the URLs should be customisable, but maybe I'm wrong.
I wholeheartedly agree; I would very much like to see URL customization implemented, with fine-grained control, including being able to modify the word "threads" (in /threads/), opting to have the ID number before or after the descriptive title, allowing no "wordy" descriptive title at all, and being able to set both a prefix and suffix for all thread and post ID numbers used in URLs.
